Give pie and tart crust a little longer baking time than you normally would for the best results. They should be golden caramel in color instead of pale blonde. This golden color means that the sugar used in the crust has caramelized, giving the crust a crisp and sweet flavor.

When cooking a large meal for a family gathering or dinner party, preparation is key. First, check that you have everything you need to get started. Organize everything so you can start cooking, including the spices and utensils. Having everything ready will take some of the stress off and increase the chances of your success.

Always taste a cooked sample of you dish before cooking the rest of the meat. Meats such as meatballs, hamburgers and meatloaf need to be seasoned carefully. Avoid cooking all of it after it’s been seasoned. Rather, set aside a small bit of the meat and cook it the same way you will make the rest. Once you’ve tasted the meat, change the seasoning accordingly, then cook the entire piece of meat.

Make sure that the knives you are using are very sharp. Dull knives are more dangerous to use and they are less productive as well. It is easy to cut yourself if you are using a dull knife than slicing it with a very sharp one.

Fresh foods are always a better choice than frozen or dried ones regardless of what type of food you are cooking. Use fresh ingredients, as they bring out the flavor in a dish, and they are also less expensive.

If you cooked with a sauce, save the leftover sauce in an ice cube tray that you can freeze. Then, at a later date, it is a simple process to reheat the cubes on your stove top in a pan. Have no fear, for the sauce will taste great even after being frozen in the trays!

If you are making a meal for someone that you want to make a good impression on, be sure to make something you know how to make well. Don’t attempt a dish that is new or very far out of your experience level. You will have a more relaxed and less anxious cooking experience.

Read the labels for any product that you buy to use in a recipe. Many of the most common ingredients can contain unhealthy and unnecessary additives. You want to make sure that the product is not too high in sugars or in sodium as both can cause extreme health problems if over consumed.

When cooking, it is always a good idea to get a little creative. You do not have to follow a recipe to the “T”. Sometimes adding or taking away a little extra of this or that can alter the taste so much, that it exceeds the original recipe itself. That is a sign of a true cook!

Although you might have the urge to impress them by cooking fancy food, do not try new recipes when cooking for important people. Whether you are preparing a meal for your boss, a new date or your in-laws, your cooking is most impressive when you prepare great dishes you feel very confident with. Cook a dish you are familiar with in order to really give them your best.

Follow the advice you find helpful and within your means. In no time, family members and close friends will be wondering just how you managed to prepare such delicious foods in your apartment.
